INFORMATION ABOUT THE CANADIAN Online Visa, or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

1. About the Canadian Online Visa, or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

As of March 15, 2016, all foreign nationals wishing to travel to or transit through Canada must possess valid travel authorization.

Without valid travel authorization, entry into Canada will be denied. All eligible foreign nationals from the countries listed below may apply for the Canadian online visa, also known as the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), an electronically issued authorization. Passengers may be denied boarding if they attempt to travel without a valid eTA.

2. Number of Entries and eTA Expiration

An eTA is a multiple entry visa valid for 5 consecutive years. It allows its holder to travel to and enter Canada as many times as they wish during its validity period or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

3. What countries and territories need to apply for an eTA?

As of March 2016, citizens of the following countries require a Canadian online travel authorization (eTA) before boarding a flight to Canada:

British overseas territory citizen who derives that citizenship through birth, descent, naturalization or registration in one of the British overseas territories of:

Other travelers who must also apply for an eTA

Potential visitors who meet any of the following requirements will also need to apply for an eTA before being allowed to travel to or transit through Canada:

  • Persons lawfully admitted to the United States and that have been granted permanent residence (United States permanent residents)
  • Holder of a passport or travel document issued by the Holy See.
  • Holder of an Israeli national passport.
  • Holder of a passport issued by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.
  • Holder of a passport issued by the United Kingdom to a British National (Overseas), as a person born, naturalized or registered in Hong Kong.
  • Holder of a passport issued by the United Kingdom to a British subject, which contains the observation that the holder has the right of abode in the United Kingdom.
  • Holder of an ordinary passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan that includes the personal identification number of the individual. Note: Taiwanese citizens holding a passport issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Taiwan that does not include their personal identification number need a visa to come to Canada.

4. Confirm or Check the Status of A Submitted Canadian Online Visa (eTA) Application

To check the status of a completed Canadian online visa (eTA) application, or to confirm its submission, please submit this form and include the following information:

  • Name
  • Passport number
  • Email address
  • Transaction ID

5. Canadian Online Visa (eTA) Application

To apply online, eligible applicants will need a valid passport, an email address, and a credit card to complete the Canadian online visa (eTA) application. Applicants will be asked to provide the following information, among other things:

  • Name
  • gender
  • date and place of birth
  • address
  • marital status
  • nationality
  • passport number

Applicants should also be prepared to answer a few basic questions to determine if they are eligible to travel to or transit through Canada, including queries about the applicant’s current employment, whether they will possess sufficient funds for the duration of the trip, and whether they suffer from any medical issues.
